I've dealth with the exact same scenario at the company I currently work for... it's funny, because the guys (or girls, lets not assume girls can't write awful software too!) from SourceGear are also the ones who are famous for writing articles on why it's ok to release software with a ton of bugs as long as you know what they are... hmmmm.... and this is before you even mention VSS itself... which I suppose can be considered the aforementioned 'butterknife.' It's one of the products microsoft just bought from some other company, bundled, and really never developed... ever. In fact, they CALL the file mass a database, when there is really no basis for the data at all... E.F.
